The Acting State Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Eugene Bessong Obia, has called on the Governor of Cross River State, H.E. Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, to ensure a level playing field ahead of the upcoming local government council elections in the state.
This appeal was made on August 30th, 2024, during an interactive meeting with the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Political Affairs to the Governor, Comrade Dunamis Archibong. The meeting, held at Anchor Vino Hotel, Asari Eso Layout, Calabar, provided a platform for the Labour Party to voice its expectations regarding the political environment as the state prepares for the elections.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Obia acknowledged the contributions of key figures within the party who have significantly advanced its progress. He mentioned Hon. Alvin Ochang, Rt. Hon. Daniel Asuquo (Dansuki), Hon. Bassey Akiba, the representative for Odukpani/Calabar Municipal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Gen. Enang Essien, Hon. Brain Odey, who represents Yala II State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly (CRSHA), and Hon. John Ifere, among others.
He also solicited continued support as the party prepares to embark on statewide grassroots mobilization in anticipation of the local government council elections. He commended the SSA for his proactive engagement with the Labour Party and urged the Governor to foster a healthy and competitive atmosphere for all political parties in the forthcoming elections.
“We appreciate the visit from the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Political Affairs to the Governor of Cross River State. Your active engagement with the Labour Party is commendable. Please convey our regards to the Governor, as we trust he will ensure his usual level playing field for all political parties in the upcoming local government council elections.”
Responding to Mr. Obia’s remarks, Comrade Dunamis Archibong emphasized the purpose of his visit, which was to establish synergy with the Labour Party through synchronized leadership, aimed at bettering the state in line with the People’s First agenda of the political affairs unit.
“I am here to engage with the Labour Party and other political institutions in a bid to promote harmony and a dynamic political environment that will lead to significant contributions toward the state’s growth and development. Now is the time for governance.”
Comrade Archibong further assured that the Otu-led administration is ready and willing to cooperate and collaborate with all political parties, stakeholders, and related political apparatus for the advancement and development of the state. “I thank the Labour Party for the audience and hope to have more interactive sessions whenever the occasion demands,” he added.
For the people of Cross River State, the hope is that this approach will lead to a more inclusive and democratic process, where every vote counts, and every party has an equal opportunity to present its vision for the future
