In a heartfelt ceremony, Senator Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor, in company of his beloved wife, Barr. Mrs Gertrude Manyo Sandy-Onor, delivered a deeply moving tribute to honour the memory of the Late Ntufam Erim Agbor Mfongang, a reliable relative and pillar of support.
The event, bringing together family members, friends, relatives, and villagers, held on December 7, 2024, at the deceased compound at Abijang Community in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The visibly emotional Senator Onor, recounted the profound bond he shared with the deceased, beginning from their first encounter decades ago.
“I met him many decades ago when my father had just purchased a Volkswagen. My father needed someone to teach him how to drive, and he called this young, fair, handsome relative of his. That was the first time I met him.”
He went further to describe how the deceased stood by him through thick and thin.
“Many years after I had grown up and started teaching in the university and I started doing politics, of course, first with Dr. Okey, and later independently, this my uncle who lies here chose me beyond every other consideration. He chose me with finality. He chose me in spite of the challenges, troubles, and difficulties. He chose me to a point where all of the family now saw reasons and followed me. He chose me in spite of all odds.”
“He would leave Abijang even in the death of the night to see me when he hears I’m around. He would follow me all over the place in spite of his age. He would pray for me and stand by me. Thank you so much for believing in me.”
He also shared the last conversation they had and pledge to uphold the values and love they shared.
“As at the time of your passing we may not have reached the Eldorado that we planned for ourselves, but that is life. When I heard you were sick and you were brought to Ikom I’m grateful to God I was able to speak with you and to let you know that money would not have caused you to pass. I was ready and willing to take you anywhere and I was happy that I communicated that to you. You passed at the time that God elected that you should pass the way all men will when our respective times will come. I pledged to you that I would return the same love, I would keep making you proud.”
In his closing remarks, Senator Onor expressed immense gratitude for the support and love and prayed for the repose of Ntufam Mfongang’s soul.
“Thank you for demonstrating love; thank you for consolidating me with my family in Abijang; thank you for having me have a sense of belonging. May God bless your soul because as it is said, you may have been traditional, but you knew and trusted God, and we believe strongly that God will receive your soul. May your sweet soul rest in perfect peace, Amen!”
