His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the Obong of Calabar, today played host to members of the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review at the Obong’s Palace in Calabar.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, was accompanied by distinguished lawmakers including Rep. Bassey Akiba (Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency), and Hon. Alex Ogbonna. The high-level team was warmly received by His Eminence and members of the Etuboms’ Traditional Council in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cultural honor.
The visit comes ahead of the South-South Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Metropolitan Hotel, Calabar.
The interaction, the Obong of Calabar emphasized the importance of inclusive governance, equity, and the preservation of cultural identity in the ongoing constitutional review process. He lauded the committee for engaging traditional institutions, recognizing them as critical stakeholders in shaping a more representative and people-oriented constitution.
The Obong and the Etuboms’ Council expressed readiness to lend their voice to the national discourse, reiterating the need for a constitution that protects the rights of all Nigerians while reflecting the unique aspirations of the South-South region.
The palace appreciates the visit and reaffirms its support for initiatives that strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and unity.
