The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the payment of N39.6 billion in outstanding pension arrears owed to retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).
The National President of the union, Godwin Abumisi, described the approval as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of pensioners and address long-standing concerns over unpaid entitlements.
According to Abumisi, the approved sum represents the arrears of the 10.6 per cent pension increase previously granted to eligible retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme but yet to be fully paid.
He praised the Tinubu administration for demonstrating commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, noting that the payment would provide much-needed financial relief to thousands of pensioners across the country who have endured years of hardship due to delayed pension adjustments.
The NUP president also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and relevant agencies involved in facilitating the approval, urging them to ensure the prompt disbursement of the funds to beneficiaries.
Abumisi further appealed to the government to sustain reforms aimed at improving pension administration and ensuring that retirees receive their entitlements as and when due.
The approval of the N39.6 billion arrears is expected to benefit pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme and is seen as part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to enhance the welfare of retired public servants and restore confidence in Nigeria’s pension system.
