Mary Habila’s Death: Atiku Calls for Umahi to Step Aside Pending Probe

Written by Mary Bassey

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend the Minister of Works, David Umahi, pending the outcome of investigations into the death of 26-year-old nurse, Mary Habila.

Habila, who worked at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) in Uburu, Ebonyi State, reportedly died on June 27 under controversial circumstances at a residence said to be associated with the minister.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, Atiku extended his condolences to Habila’s family and described the incident as one that demands a transparent, credible and independent investigation.

The former vice president argued that asking the minister to step aside while investigations are ongoing would help preserve public confidence in the process and eliminate any perception of interference.

According to Atiku, the Federal Government has a responsibility to ensure that justice is served without fear or favour, stressing that Nigerians deserve full disclosure of the facts surrounding the young nurse’s death.

He urged President Tinubu to demonstrate commitment to accountability by allowing security agencies and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation free from political influence.

The circumstances surrounding Habila’s death have continued to generate public concern, with many Nigerians calling for an impartial probe to establish the facts and ensure justice for the deceased and her family.
