The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Branch, has officially suspended the industrial action it embarked upon on May 19, 2026, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities across the institution.
The decision was reached on Monday during an emergency congress of the union held at the Calabar Campus of UNICROSS.
Governor Otu’s Intervention Leads to Breakthrough
The suspension of the strike follows a series of interventions by the management of the University and the Cross River State Government aimed at resolving the lingering industrial dispute.
As part of the peace efforts, the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, led members of the university management and the leadership of ASUU UNICROSS to a closed-door meeting with the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.
Prior to that meeting, the Vice Chancellor had also facilitated a separate engagement between student leaders and Governor Otu, both of which took place last week.
According to reports, the suspension of the strike was largely influenced by the assurances and commitments made by the Governor during the engagements.
Academic Activities to Resume Across UNICROSS
The latest development signals a return to industrial harmony within the University and underscores the commitment of both the university management and the state government towards ensuring uninterrupted academic activities.
The University also commended students, ASUU members, and other stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and constructive engagement throughout the strike period.
With the suspension of the industrial action, students are expected to return to campus as academic activities are set to resume immediately, while further directives and details are expected to be communicated by the university management.
