The South-West leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has thrown its weight behind the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, dismissing allegations against him as unfounded and politically motivated.
The position was made known after a meeting of recognised national and zonal officers of the party in the South-West, led by the National Vice Chairman (South-West), Akinbowale Omole.
The zonal leadership clarified that the approval of the party’s South-West candidates for the 2027 general elections was the responsibility of the National Executive Committee (NEC), not the National Secretary as alleged by critics.
According to the leaders, Aregbesola acted within the provisions of the party’s constitution and had no unilateral authority to approve or impose candidates.
They described those behind the allegations as “disgruntled elements” allegedly aligned with former presidential aspirant Kachikwu Ibe and House of Representatives member Leke Abejide, noting that both figures recently suffered a setback at the Court of Appeal over an internal party dispute.
The South-West leadership maintained that the petition seeking Aregbesola’s removal lacked merit and should be disregarded by party members and the public.
Reaffirming their confidence in the former Osun State governor, the leaders pledged continued support for his leadership and urged members to remain united ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
They also stressed the need for party stakeholders to focus on strengthening the ADC rather than engaging in actions capable of creating unnecessary divisions within the party.
