The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 167,486 candidates who sat the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates across Nigeria over alleged involvement in examination malpractice.
The withheld results account for 8.59 per cent of the 1,950,726 candidates who participated in the examination nationwide. Despite the large figure, WAEC noted that it represents an improvement compared to the 9.7 per cent recorded in the 2025 examination.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Lagos by the Head of the WAEC National Office, Amos Dangut, during the official release of the 2026 WASSCE results.
According to Dangut, the council observed a rise in examination malpractice involving the use of mobile phones inside examination halls, despite a longstanding ban on electronic devices during exams. He also raised concerns over organised cheating syndicates operating in some schools, describing the trend as a major threat to the credibility of public examinations.
Candidates whose results have been withheld are expected to await the outcome of WAEC’s investigations. The council stated that cases of suspected malpractice would be thoroughly reviewed before final decisions are made on the affected results.
WAEC advised candidates, parents and school authorities to remain patient while the review process is ongoing, stressing that only those found innocent after investigations would have their results released.
