Police Battle Looters as Fire Ravages Calabar SPAR Mall
Police operatives in Calabar, Cross River State, are battling to prevent looters from carting away goods and valuables from the SPAR shopping mall after a devastating fire broke out at the facility on Saturday morning.
The blaze reportedly started inside the popular shopping outlet, sending thick smoke into the surrounding area and causing flames to become visible from parts of Barracks Road.
As firefighters worked to contain the inferno, police officers were deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent individuals from taking advantage of the chaos to loot shops and recoverable items from the premises.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed that officers had been on the ground since the incident began.
“Our men have been on the ground since morning when the fire incident happened. We are battling to contain the miscreants and other looters trying to cart away valuable goods salvaged,” Akata said.
He added that preliminary indications suggested that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, although the exact cause would have to be established after a proper investigation.
Firefighters continued efforts to put out the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the shopping complex.
The extent of damage to goods and property was not immediately known as emergency responders continued their operations.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates on the incident, including the confirmed cause of the fire and the value of property destroyed.
