SERAP Raises Fresh Question Over Political Donations Ahead of 2027

Written by Mary Bassey

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publicly disclose the limits on political donations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, on Sunday, SERAP urged INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to clarify whether the commission has exercised its powers under Section 91 of the Electoral Act, 2026, to set limits on contributions to political parties and candidates.

The organisation also called on INEC to publish the applicable limits and ensure that political parties, candidates, donors and members of the public are adequately informed.

Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026 empowers INEC to place limits on the amount of money or other assets an individual may contribute to a political party or candidate. It also allows the commission to demand information about the amount donated and the source of the funds.

Under INEC’s current Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, the maximum amount that an individual, group of individuals or entity may donate to a political party or aspirant for an election is ₦500 million. Political parties are also required to identify and disclose the source of contributions above that threshold.

SERAP said publishing the limits would promote transparency and accountability in political financing as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.

The group noted that INEC had already released the Notice of Election and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 general elections. INEC has fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
