Healthcare access in the Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwarra Federal Constituency has received a major boost, with over 10,000 residents benefiting from the free medical outreach programme of Hon. Peter Akpanke, member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives.
According to data released from the initiative, 10,456 individuals have been reached, 112 successful surgeries performed, and 19 surgical referrals managed since the programme commenced. The figures bring to the fore what constituents now describe as a “healing touch” that goes beyond conventional constituency projects.
Hon. Akpanke’s free medical outreach has become a hallmark of his commitment to putting people first. Unlike one-off interventions, the programme runs consistently throughout the year, with medical expenses for constituents covered at major hospitals across the federal constituency four times annually.
The initiative has significantly lightened the financial burden for struggling families in a region where the high cost of healthcare often pushes many into hopelessness.
A standout feature of the programme is the strategic partnership with Sacred Heart Hospital in Obudu. Through this collaboration, residents facing serious health conditions receive treatment at no cost, ensuring that even the most vulnerable have access to quality medical care.
Speaking on the impact, constituents and community leaders described the outreach as life-saving.
“True representation is not measured only by the laws passed in Abuja, but by the lives you touch back home,” a beneficiary from Obanliku noted. “Hon. Akpanke has shown us that leadership is about service and healing.”
Health analysts say the scale of the intervention with over ten thousand direct beneficiaries and more than a hundred surgeries represents one of the most organised constituency health programmes in Cross River State.
As the outreach continues, stakeholders say Hon. Akpanke’s model is setting a new benchmark for what legislative representation should look like such as being consistent, accessible, and focused on saving lives.
