President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for Europe to begin a three-week annual leave, with the Presidency saying the break will give him time to rest and “refuel” after months of intensive engagement in running the country.
Tinubu left Abuja on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with London, United Kingdom, listed as his first destination. Presidential Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, spoke to journalists during the President’s departure.
According to Dare, Tinubu had spent the past six to seven months dealing with major issues concerning the country, particularly security, the economy and other matters of governance.
He said the President’s break had become necessary as the political season ahead of the 2027 elections gathers momentum.
Dare explained that the President would use the period to recharge ahead of what is expected to be several months of intense campaign activities, while continuing to remain engaged with government affairs.
“He will receive briefings from his ministers, from the service chiefs as the case may be, and from every other person who is handling very key decisions in our country,” Dare said.
The Presidency had earlier announced that Tinubu would spend three weeks in Europe as part of his 2026 annual leave. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President would return to Nigeria after the working vacation to join campaign activities ahead of the January 2027 elections.
The departure comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the campaign period for the presidential and National Assembly elections already underway.
Footage from Abuja showed the President arriving at the airport in a motorcade before walking alongside his aides and boarding the aircraft, as security and military personnel saluted and officials waved him farewell.
The Presidency has not disclosed the full itinerary for Tinubu’s three-week stay or confirmed the other European countries he may visit beyond London.
