Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged to strengthen the state government’s partnership with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to protect critical national assets and tackle economic sabotage.
Fubara made the commitment on Tuesday when the newly deployed General Officer Commanding, 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Everest Okoro, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The GOC was accompanied by senior officers and other security personnel from the division, which has operational responsibility for Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom states.
The governor described the relationship between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Army as longstanding, noting that the military had provided vital support to the state during challenging periods.
Fubara said the prevailing security situation required all relevant stakeholders to work together, particularly in protecting oil and gas infrastructure and other assets of national importance from vandals and criminals.
He assured Okoro that his administration would provide the necessary support to enable the 6 Division to effectively carry out its responsibilities in Rivers State.
The governor also said the state would work with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to strengthen joint operations and improve security across the state.
Fubara urged the new GOC to prioritise the security of Rivers, stressing the strategic role of the state in Nigeria’s economy because of its oil and gas resources and critical infrastructure.
Responding, Okoro assured the governor that the 6 Division would sustain its efforts to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure in the state.
The Army commander identified pipeline vandalism, cult-related violence and other emerging crimes as security threats requiring sustained vigilance.
He stressed the importance of intelligence gathering, information sharing and stronger collaboration between security agencies, government authorities, traditional rulers and community leaders.
Okoro also pledged that the division would maintain operational effectiveness and strengthen joint and multi-agency operations with other security agencies.
He commended the Rivers State Government and residents for their continued support for the Nigerian Army and called for greater cooperation to enhance the protection of critical national infrastructure.
The GOC further assured the governor that the 6 Division under his command would remain committed to securing Rivers State and creating a safe environment for socio-economic development.
