What Really Happened? LASU Reacts After Woman Assaults Student in Hostel

Written by Mary Bassey

Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned an alleged physical assault involving a female student and an older woman in a hostel room, following the circulation of a video of the incident on social media.

The video, which went viral on social media, showed the woman grabbing, pushing and repeatedly hitting the student during a confrontation inside the room.

The student has been identified as Adebayo Oluwatumininu, a 300-level Nursing student of the LASU College of Medicine, Ikeja. According to the LASU Students’ Union, the woman involved is the mother of Hassan Temiloluwa, a Physiotherapy student who shared the accommodation with Oluwatumininu.

The students’ union said Oluwatumininu sustained an eye injury during the incident and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical evaluation and treatment. A medical report on the extent of her injuries was expected to provide further details.

The union also disclosed that the woman was taken into police custody and was expected to face legal proceedings over allegations of physical assault and threats.

Meanwhile, Hassan Temiloluwa is expected to appear before the university’s Disciplinary Committee over her alleged involvement in the incident.

The LASU Students’ Union condemned the use of violence in resolving disputes, stressing that disagreements involving students should not escalate into physical attacks. It also commended the university management, the Centre for Gender-Based and Sexual Violence and other individuals involved in responding to the matter.

The exact circumstances that led to the confrontation were not fully disclosed in the reports, and the parties involved have not publicly provided a detailed account of what triggered the altercation.

The development has continued to generate reactions online, particularly over the safety and welfare of students living in university-related accommodation.
