Joshua Van Retains Flyweight Title Over Pantoja in UFC 331 Thriller
Joshua Van successfully defended his UFC flyweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Alexandre Pantoja in a thrilling five-round contest at UFC 331.
Van was awarded the victory on all three judges’ scorecards, with scores of 49-46, 49-47 and 50-45, as he extended his record to 17-2.
Pantoja made a strong start to the fight, using takedowns and top control to put pressure on the champion during the early rounds. However, Van gradually found his rhythm as the bout progressed.
The champion’s sharp boxing, movement and volume striking became increasingly effective in the later rounds, allowing him to take control of the contest and secure the unanimous decision.
The fight featured a clear contrast between Pantoja’s grappling-heavy approach and Van’s boxing-focused style. Pantoja remained competitive throughout and showed his toughness, but Van’s striking output helped him create separation on the judges’ scorecards.
Observers, including Paulo Costa, highlighted the brawler-versus-boxer dynamic as the two fighters battled through five intense rounds.
With the victory, Van retains his UFC flyweight championship and moves to 17-2, while Pantoja falls to 30-7 after another hard-fought title contest.
