The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, on Wednesday.
The minister congratulated Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, urging citizens to use the occasion to promote national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He also called on Nigerians to draw inspiration from the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating greater love for the nation and contributing to the building of a country that future generations would be proud of.
According to Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s diversity remains a source of strength, while the collective determination of its citizens is essential to achieving a stronger and more prosperous nation.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
The minister further assured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an enabling environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
The 2026 Independence Anniversary is being celebrated under the theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.”
The Federal Government said the theme reflects its determination to consolidate ongoing reforms and translate their gains into greater opportunities and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, making this year’s celebration the country’s 66th anniversary.
