Julius Berger Moves to Fix Damaged East-West Road Hours After Oborevwori’s Order

Written by Mary Bassey

Construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has commenced emergency repair work on the damaged section of the East-West Road at Agbarho, Delta State, just hours after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori directed the company to intervene.

The development follows the collapse of a portion of the federal highway in Ughelli North Local Government Area, which was triggered by heavy rainfall and severe erosion, leaving motorists and commuters stranded and disrupting movement along the busy corridor.

Governor Oborevwori had earlier ordered Julius Berger to immediately undertake remedial works on the affected section to ease the hardship experienced by residents, transport operators and other road users.

The directive was disclosed on Thursday by the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, in a statement issued in Asaba.

Although the East-West Road is under the Federal Government, the governor directed the intervention in response to the growing difficulties faced by road users.

Aniagwu explained that the decision reflected the administration’s commitment to addressing urgent infrastructure challenges without being restricted by bureaucratic boundaries.

The East-West Road serves as a major transportation and economic corridor in the Niger Delta, connecting communities and facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services.

The damaged section had caused significant traffic disruptions, raising concerns over the impact on commuters, traders and businesses that depend on the route.

Julius Berger’s swift mobilisation to the site is expected to help restore movement and reduce the difficulties caused by the road failure.

Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected area as repair activities continue.

The Delta State Government has also reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant federal agencies and private-sector partners to address critical infrastructure challenges across the state.
