What Saudi Doctors Just Did for 52 Patients in Kano

Written by Mary Bassey

A six-day medical outreach supported by Saudi Arabia has provided free specialised surgical treatment to 52 patients in Kano State, bringing relief to residents who could not afford the cost of the procedures

The intervention, conducted at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), was organised in collaboration with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, with a team of specialist doctors from Saudi Arabia carrying out the surgeries.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, commended the Saudi Arabian Government and the medical team for their support, describing the initiative as a significant contribution to improving access to specialised healthcare for vulnerable residents.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the outreach on Friday, the governor expressed appreciation for the partnership, noting that the intervention had helped patients access medical services that would otherwise have been financially difficult to obtain.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the latest exercise marked the fourth time the Saudi medical team had conducted a surgical outreach in Kano.

Yusuf recalled that a similar intervention in 2023 provided more than 2,300 free eye surgeries to residents of the state.

The leader of the visiting medical team, renowned urologist Dr Ali Ibn Mahfouz, confirmed that the specialists successfully completed the required procedures.

He disclosed that all 52 surgeries were carried out without complications, highlighting the team’s commitment to delivering quality medical care.

The governor also recalled the case of conjoined twins from Kano who were taken to Saudi Arabia in 2023 for specialised surgery and remained under medical care for two years before returning to Nigeria.

He further revealed that arrangements were underway for the commencement of open-heart surgeries in Kano, signalling plans to expand access to advanced medical treatment within the state.

Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, recruiting medical personnel and expanding access to specialised medical services.

He also appreciated the management and staff of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, alongside the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria and the Consul General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Sheikh Khalil Ahmad, for their contributions to the partnership.

The intervention highlights the role of international medical collaboration in addressing healthcare challenges and providing life-changing treatment to patients who might otherwise struggle to afford specialised surgeries.
