Trump Makes $5,000 Promise to Americans Ahead of 2026 Midterm Elections

Written by Mary Bassey

United States President Donald Trump has promised to give every adult American citizen $5,000 if the Republican Party retains control of both chambers of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections.

Trump made the announcement on September 9 while addressing a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, where he urged voters to support his party in the upcoming elections.

Describing the proposed payment as the “Trump Dividend,” the president said the money would be distributed to adult U.S. citizens if Republicans win both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

He attributed the proposed payout to what he described as the country’s strong economic performance, adding that recipients would be required to spend the money within the United States.

However, the president did not provide a detailed plan explaining how the payments would be funded or distributed.

The proposal has also raised questions about its financial implications, with estimates suggesting that distributing $5,000 to approximately 240 million eligible adults could cost the federal government around $1.2 trillion.

Financial experts have expressed concerns about the potential impact on government spending, national debt and inflation, while the proposal would also require congressional approval before it could be implemented.

Vice President JD Vance has suggested that tariff revenues could help finance the payments, although questions remain about whether such revenue would be sufficient to cover the proposed cost.

As the November elections approach, Trump’s promise has become part of the Republican Party’s broader campaign message, with control of Congress expected to be a major issue for voters.

The proposed $5,000 payment remains a political promise and has not been approved as an official government payment programme.
