North-East Governors Raise ₦10.8bn for Regional Airline, Here’s What’s Next

Written by Mary Bassey

Governors of the six North-Eastern states have raised ₦10.8 billion in counterpart funding towards the establishment of a regional airline aimed at improving air connectivity and boosting economic activities across the region.

The Chairman of the North-East Governors’ Forum and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, disclosed this on Friday, October 2, 2026, during the opening ceremony of the forum’s 10th meeting in Maiduguri.

Zulum said the funds were part of a broader financial commitment by the six states to establish the proposed North-East Air Shuttle, adding that the remaining contributions would be remitted before the end of October to facilitate the commencement of flight operations.

According to the governor, the regional airline is expected to address transportation challenges, strengthen connections between states and create new opportunities for businesses and travellers.

The participating states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.

The proposed airline is part of a wider regional development strategy designed to improve infrastructure, encourage investment and accelerate economic recovery in the North-East, which has faced years of insecurity and disruptions to economic activities.

Earlier in January 2026, the six governors agreed to contribute ₦5 billion each, bringing the total funding target to ₦30 billion for the acquisition of two aircraft.

The plan is also expected to reduce the region’s reliance on commercial airlines, some of which have previously suspended or withdrawn services from certain routes.

If successfully implemented, the initiative could improve access to major cities, facilitate business travel and strengthen transportation links between the North-East and other parts of Nigeria.

However, the commencement of operations will depend on the completion of the funding arrangements and other necessary preparations for the airline’s take-off.
