The European Union is exploring new funding opportunities and cultural projects aimed at supporting Nigerian and other African artists, with a focus on festivals, training, workshops and collaborations between African and European creatives.
The announcement was made during the Lagos Contemporary Circus Festival held at the National Theatre in Lagos.
Beyond the cultural value, the initiative could have a bigger economic impact for Nigeria’s creative industry.
Nigeria is already home to musicians, filmmakers, dancers, fashion designers, visual artists and performers whose work attracts audiences both locally and internationally. However, many creatives still struggle with limited access to financing, professional training, international networks, touring opportunities and larger markets.
This is where funding programmes could make a significant difference.
While financial support for a single performance or festival can help an artist gain visibility, longer-term investment could have a greater impact by helping creatives establish companies, train technical teams, develop professional productions, build international partnerships and reach paying audiences outside Nigeria.
The EU’s broader Africa-Europe cultural partnership has already committed more than €70 million to programmes supporting skills development, audiovisual production, employment and income generation across the creative sector.
However, experts and stakeholders will need to ensure that such funding goes beyond organising workshops and one-off cultural events.
The bigger opportunity is to help Nigerian creatives build sustainable businesses that can create jobs, attract investment, export Nigerian culture and generate income from international markets.
If properly implemented, EU support could help move Nigeria’s creative industry from simply celebrating talent to building businesses around that talent.
