The Federal Government has approved an increase in the budget for feeding members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation course, in a move aimed at improving their welfare.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed the development while interacting with members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra.
According to reports published on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Nafiu said the Budget Office was aware of the upward review, adding that the increased feeding budget is expected to take effect in 2027.
The development is expected to support efforts to improve feeding arrangements for corps members during the mandatory three-week orientation programme, where participants undergo physical training, leadership activities, skills acquisition and other preparations for national service.
Although the exact amount of the increase was not disclosed, the approval signals a step towards addressing the welfare needs of corps members during their stay in orientation camps across the country.
During his interaction with the corps members, Nafiu also advised them to manage their finances wisely, cultivate a savings habit and avoid unnecessary spending.
He further urged them to prioritise their safety while travelling, particularly by avoiding night journeys. He advised corps members to stop their journeys before 6 p.m. where necessary and continue the following day.
The NYSC chief also encouraged the participants to acquire practical skills that could improve their employment prospects and help them become self-reliant after completing their national service.
The feeding budget increase forms part of broader efforts to improve the welfare and camp experience of corps members. However, further details on the revised allocation are yet to be made public.
