2027 Elections: Speaker Abbas Sends Strong Message to Lawmakers

Written by Mary Bassey

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has warned lawmakers against allowing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections to distract them from their legislative responsibilities.

Abbas gave the warning on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as the House resumed plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja following its annual recess.

He urged members to attend plenary and committee meetings regularly, stressing that their responsibilities to Nigerians must remain a priority despite growing political activities ahead of the elections.

According to the Speaker, lawmakers were elected to serve their constituents throughout their tenure and must not abandon their duties for election campaigns.

He emphasised that political ambitions and party affiliations should not take precedence over national interest and the constitutional responsibilities of the legislature.

Abbas also proposed a 100-day legislative programme aimed at accelerating work on pending bills, clearing outstanding committee reports and strengthening legislative oversight.

As part of the plan, he called for major bills and urgent national issues to receive priority attention on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Speaker further identified the proposed State Police Bill, the Reserved Seats for Women Bill and other pending constitutional amendment proposals as priorities for the House.

He also urged the Federal Government to submit the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework for the 2027 budget promptly to allow lawmakers sufficient time to scrutinise the proposals.

Abbas said the remaining period of the 10th National Assembly would be crucial for completing outstanding legislative assignments and demonstrating accountability to Nigerians.

He urged lawmakers to remain focused on their duties until the end of their tenure, warning that the approaching elections must not interfere with the work of the House.
