Germany Reveals How to Apply for Long-Stay Visas Online

Written by Mary Bassey

Germany has outlined the steps applicants can follow to apply for selected long-stay visas online, giving eligible foreign nationals an opportunity to submit their applications and supporting documents digitally before attending an in-person appointment.

The German Embassy disclosed the information in a post on its official X account on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, directing prospective applicants to the country’s Consular Services Portal.

The portal, available at digital.diplo.de/visa, allows applicants to select their country of residence, the relevant German diplomatic mission and the appropriate visa category before completing their applications.

According to Germany’s official visa guidance, the online application process is designed to make submissions more convenient by allowing applicants to upload their documents for an initial review before visiting the mission in person.

How to Apply for a German Long-Stay Visa Online

Applicants can follow these steps to begin the process:

1. Visit the official portal: Open the German Consular Services Portal at https://digital.diplo.de/visa.
2. Select your visa category: Choose the purpose of your intended stay in Germany and the appropriate visa type.
3. Select your country and mission: Choose your country of residence and the German embassy or consulate responsible for processing your application.
4. Register and sign in: Create an account on the portal and log in to begin your application.
5. Complete the application form: Provide the required personal information and details about your intended stay.
6. Upload supporting documents: Submit the documents requested for your particular visa category.
7. Submit for review: Send your completed application and documents through the portal for an initial assessment.
8. Attend an appointment: If your application passes the preliminary review, you will receive instructions for booking an in-person appointment to provide your biometric information, present original documents where required and pay the applicable visa fee.

Applicants may be asked to correct errors or provide missing documents during the preliminary review.

Who Can Apply Through the Portal?

Germany’s Consular Services Portal primarily supports selected national visa applications for people intending to stay in the country for more than 90 days.

These visas may cover purposes such as studying, employment and family reunification, depending on the visa categories available through the applicant’s responsible German mission.

However, the online service does not cover every visa category or every German mission. Applicants should confirm that their intended visa type and country of residence are available on the portal before proceeding.

What Nigerian Applicants Should Know

For Nigerians planning to travel to Germany for work, education or family reunification, the German mission advises applicants to check the official visa requirements and confirm the correct application procedure before submitting their documents.

The German Consulate General in Lagos is generally responsible for visa applications from Nigeria, although certain cases may fall under the jurisdiction of the German Embassy in Abuja.

Applicants should also note that completing an online application does not automatically guarantee visa approval or eliminate the need for an in-person appointment.

The applicable requirements, fees and processing times depend on the visa category and the individual circumstances of each applicant.

Prospective applicants can consult the German mission’s official website for Nigeria for detailed information on visa categories, documentation requirements and appointment procedures.

The online portal is intended to simplify the application process, but applicants must still satisfy the relevant immigration requirements before a visa can be granted.
