ECOWAS Court Gets New President as Brumskine Pledges Timely Justice

Written by Mary Bassey

Justice Charlyne M. Brumskine of Liberia has emerged as the new President of the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with Justice Désiré Henri Aihou of Benin elected as Vice-President.

The two justices were elected on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by the court’s newly constituted college of judges, marking the beginning of a new leadership era for the regional judicial institution.

Their emergence follows the conclusion of the tenure of the previous college of judges and the inauguration of five new judges appointed to serve a four-year, non-renewable term.

The new judges, who were sworn in on October 6, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria, are Justice Brumskine, Justice Aihou, Justice Awa Bah of The Gambia, Justice Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu of Nigeria, and Dr Yaouza Ouro-Sama of Togo.

The President and Vice-President will lead the court’s judicial and institutional affairs for two years within their four-year tenure.

The new leadership is expected to strengthen access to justice, improve judicial efficiency and promote public confidence in the regional court.

The court is also working towards the implementation of its Strategic Plan 2026–2030, known as Justice 2030, which focuses on improving access to justice, enhancing institutional effectiveness and strengthening public trust.

Established as the principal judicial organ of ECOWAS, the Community Court of Justice interprets and applies the bloc’s legal instruments and handles cases within its jurisdiction, including matters involving alleged human rights violations.

The new leadership takes office at a time when the regional institution continues to pursue more accessible, efficient and credible justice for citizens across West Africa.
