The United States military is reportedly considering using its largest non-nuclear bomb against Iran if President Donald Trump decides to resume major combat operations in the ongoing conflict.
According to a CNN report published on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, US military planners have developed potential strike options involving the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), popularly known as the “Mother of All Bombs.”
The proposed targets reportedly include Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear-related facilities, including a suspected underground site known as Pickaxe Mountain.
The report cited multiple US officials familiar with the military planning dispcussions. However, the possible use of the weapon remains under consideration and does not mean that an attack has been authorised.
The potential deployment of the MOAB would represent a significant escalation in the conflict, particularly because of the weapon’s enormous destructive capacity and the potential risk to civilians.
Despite its size, some US officials have reportedly questioned whether the bomb could achieve Washington’s military objectives, especially against heavily fortified nuclear facilities located deep underground.
The MOAB is designed to produce a massive blast over a wide area rather than penetrate deeply buried structures. Consequently, its effectiveness against Iran’s suspected underground nuclear sites remains uncertain.
The reported military preparations come as the Trump administration faces pressure to find a way to end the conflict while maintaining its stated objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
CNN’s report also indicated that US officials were considering different military options as the administration weighed how to proceed with the conflict.
For now, the possible use of the bomb remains part of reported military planning, and any decision to resume major combat operations would rest with the US president.
