On May 3rd, 2023, His Royal Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, accompanied by his entourage and the University of Calabar’s management team was warmly welcomed at the Palace of the Obong of Calabar by His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V. This remarkable visit was part of the 36th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar, and was received with a rich display of the Efik cultural dance.
The Emir of Kano and the Obong of Calabar discussed various issues affecting the country, including the need for peace and unity amongst Nigerians, enhancement of economic growth and development in the country etc
Speaking during the visit, the Emir of Kano said, \”We are one people with diverse cultures and traditions. It is important for us to embrace our differences and work together towards building a better Nigeria for all. I recall a visit with my own Father who was the Emir of Kano, to the Obong of Calabar over 30 years ago, i am glad to be here today to strengthen the bond of unity between the people of Kano and Cross River State.\”
In his response, the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, expressed his delight at the visit and stated that it was a symbol of the unity of Nigeria. He said, \”I am delighted to receive the Emir of Kano in my palace. This visit is a demonstration of the fact that we are one people with a common destiny and also reveals the string ties between both kingdoms as they both are ancient kingdoms that existed even before Nigeria as a nation. We must continue to work together towards achieving our collective goals as a nation.\”
The visit marked an important moment of cultural exchange and diplomacy between the two eminent rulers, as they engaged in discussions on various issues of mutual interest.
As a special gesture, the Obong of Calabar presented the Emir of Kano with a beautifully crafted traditional Calabar artifact, representing the rich cultural heritage of the Calabar people.
The Emir of Kano reciprocated presented the gesture by presenting the Obong of Calabar with a special gift as a token of his respect and admiration for the Obong\’s leadership and contribution to the development of Calabar and Nigeria as a whole.
Both leaders expressed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding relationship between their respective kingdoms, and exploring new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The visit of the Emir of Kano to the palace of the Obong of Calabar is a testament to the importance of cultural diplomacy in building bridges and promoting understanding between different cultures and communities.
