Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has clarified President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks on the construction of flyovers by state governments, saying the President’s comments should not be interpreted as a blanket condemnation of such projects.
Aiyedatiwa’s clarification comes as his administration prepares to flag off the construction of a new flyover in Akure on Monday, August 24, 2026. The proposed bridge, located along the Oyemekun–Oba Adesida Road, is intended to ease traffic congestion in one of the busy areas of the state capital.
The governor explained that Tinubu was specifically cautioning state governors against spending heavily on flyovers in areas where traffic volumes do not justify such infrastructure.
Tinubu had urged governors to take advantage of increased federal allocations by investing more in road networks and other infrastructure that could directly improve the living conditions of residents.
The President also noted that states were now receiving significantly higher allocations from the Federation Account, reportedly between four and five times what they previously received.
Aiyedatiwa’s position suggests that Tinubu’s remarks were aimed at ensuring that public funds are directed towards projects based on the needs and circumstances of each location, rather than discouraging governors from constructing flyovers altogether.
The Ondo governor’s clarification is particularly significant as his administration is embarking on the 2.3-kilometre Oba Adesida Flyover project in Akure. According to the state government, the project is designed to address persistent traffic congestion, improve movement and strengthen urban connectivity.
The proposed flyover will run from Adegbola Junction towards the St. Mathias/NNPC Filling Station axis, covering a major traffic corridor in the heart of Akure.
The state government has said the project forms part of Aiyedatiwa’s infrastructure agenda and is expected to improve transportation and stimulate economic activities around the area.
The clarification also comes amid renewed attention to infrastructure spending by state governments, particularly as higher federal allocations have increased the resources available to governors.
Rather than rejecting flyovers entirely, the President’s comments have therefore been framed around the need for governors to prioritise projects that are appropriate for the traffic, security and economic needs of their communities.
