Biography of Ben Akpan, the Longest-Serving Executive Director of STAN

Ben Akpan is a Nigerian professor of science education whose career has significantly influenced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria and internationally. Through decades of academic research, educational leadership, curriculum development, and global collaboration, he has contributed to strengthening science education policies and teaching practices.

Akpan currently serves as the Executive Director of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), making him the association’s longest-serving Executive Director. He is also the Chairman of the Uduogie Ivowi Education Foundation and made history as the first African to serve as President of the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE).

Education

Ben Akpan was born in Ikot Akpasia, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

He began his higher education at the University of Calabar, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education (Chemistry) in 1983. He later earned a Master of Education in Science Education from the University of Jos in 1986, before completing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Science Education at the University of Ibadan in 1999.

His academic journey laid the foundation for a career dedicated to improving science education through research, policy development, teacher training, and institutional leadership.

Over the years, Akpan has established himself as one of Nigeria’s leading voices in science education.

He has served as Secretary of the Africa Branch of the Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators (CASTME), where he contributed to advancing science and mathematics education across the African continent.

In 1994, he was commissioned by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London to produce the monograph Implementing Science & Technology for All: A Guide to Better Policy and Practice for Teachers as part of the Science, Technology and Mathematics Education Project 2000+ Supplement.

Akpan also served as a member of an international team focused on implementing science education in difficult circumstances. He further participated in developing an international science teachers’ guide, including work on adapting national science syllabuses to meet the educational needs of countries within the West African sub-region.

As Executive Director of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Akpan has overseen numerous initiatives aimed at strengthening science education throughout Nigeria. Under his leadership, the association has continued to advocate for improved teaching standards, curriculum innovation, and increased investment in STEM education.

Contributions to Science and STEM Education in Nigeria

Akpan’s work has had a lasting impact on science education policy and practice in Nigeria.

One of his notable contributions has been his involvement in curriculum development. He has played an important role in promoting the revised 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum, particularly the Basic Science and Technology component, with an emphasis on nurturing scientific curiosity and practical learning among young students.

He has also consistently advocated for improving the quality of science teachers across Nigeria. Through his research and public engagements, he has argued that sustained professional development for teachers remains essential to delivering quality science education.

Akpan has equally championed greater national investment in STEM education, stressing that strengthening Nigeria’s science and technology ecosystem is critical for sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness.

In 2022, acting on behalf of STAN, he requested land from Yakubu Gowon University (formerly the University of Abuja) to establish a world-class STAN STEM Education Center. The proposed facility is intended to enhance science education through modern infrastructure, teacher development, research, and innovation.

International Contributions

Beyond Nigeria, Akpan has played an influential role in shaping science education globally.

His international profile is anchored in his leadership within the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE). He served as President of ICASE from 2011 to 2013, becoming the first African to occupy the position.

Following his presidency, he continued his service to the organisation as Chair of the World Conferences Standing Committee, a position he held from 2013 to 2023. Through these leadership roles, he helped coordinate international science education initiatives, facilitated collaboration among science educators worldwide, and promoted best practices in STEM teaching and learning across different regions.

Throughout his academic career, Akpan has produced numerous scholarly publications focusing on science education, STEM pedagogy, teacher development, curriculum innovation, and educational policy.

Personal Life

Ben Akpan is married to Arit Ben Akpan, and they have three sons: Akwaowo Ben Akpan, Uko Ben Akpan, and Emem Ben Akpan.
