The Borno State Government has dismissed reports alleging that it sponsored former Boko Haram members for enlistment into the Nigerian Army, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The denial follows a report published by Sahara Reporters on June 25, which alleged that 40 former Boko Haram fighters shortlisted for the Nigerian Army’s 91 Regular Recruit Intake (RRI) were undergoing medical screening in Borno State as part of the recruitment process.
Reacting to the report, the state government maintained that it has never nominated or sponsored any former insurgents for recruitment into the Nigerian Army or any other security agency.
The government explained that while Borno has supported the Federal Government’s non-kinetic counter-insurgency efforts, including the rehabilitation and reintegration of repentant insurgents under approved programmes, such initiatives do not include facilitating military recruitment for ex-Boko Haram members.
Officials further urged the public to disregard what they described as unverified reports capable of creating unnecessary tension and undermining public confidence in ongoing security and peace-building efforts.
The Nigerian Army has also maintained that its recruitment process is guided by established standards, including medical, educational, and character assessments, with successful candidates expected to meet all eligibility requirements before enlistment.
The Borno State Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting security agencies in the fight against terrorism while promoting peace, reconciliation, and the safe reintegration of individuals who have genuinely renounced violence through lawful rehabilitation programmes.
