Victims of the Calabar Spar Mall fire incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, 2026, have appealed for collective support to help affected tenants recover from the devastating loss of businesses and livelihoods.
In a press statement, the affected tenants expressed their appreciation to Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and the First Lady, Bishop Dr. Mrs. Eyoawan Bassey Otu, for their commitment to the welfare and development of the people of the state.
The victims commended the administration’s People First Agenda, particularly its emphasis on peace, unity, inclusive development and the promotion of Cross River State as a welcoming and prosperous destination.
Spar Mall Fire Leaves Businesses in Distress
The affected tenants said the fire outbreak caused significant damage to several businesses operating within the Calabar Spar Mall, leaving business owners facing an uncertain future.
According to the victims, the mall occupies an important position in the economic and social life of Calabar. Beyond its role as a commercial centre, it serves as a meeting point for businesses, families, tourists, visitors and investors.
They noted that over the years, Spar Mall has contributed to Calabar’s commercial activities, particularly during major festive periods and tourism events, while providing opportunities for entrepreneurs and services to residents and visitors.
Fire Victims Appeal for Government and Private Sector Support
Against the backdrop of the losses suffered, the victims appealed to the Governor, First Lady and other stakeholders to support affected businesses as they work towards recovery.
They called for assistance from:

- Cross River State House of Assembly members
- Commissioners
- Local Government Chairmen
- International donors
- NGOs
- Corporate organisations
- Churches and religious organisations
- Friends of Cross River State
- Lovers of Calabar
- Well-meaning individuals and citizens
The victims said meaningful intervention would help affected tenants rebuild their businesses and restore their sources of livelihood.
Appeal Comes Ahead of Christmas and Calabar Carnival 2026
The victims stressed that the need for support is particularly urgent as Christmas and Carnival Calabar 2026 approach.
They noted that Carnival Calabar remains one of Cross River State’s major tourism and cultural events, attracting visitors, tourists, families and investors to the state.
According to the victims, restoring the vibrancy of Calabar Spar Mall would contribute to the overall experience of visitors and residents during the festive season.

The affected tenants appealed to Cross River people and other stakeholders to demonstrate the spirit of solidarity for which the state is known.
“Calabar is one family. Cross River State is one family. We have always been supportive of one another.”
They expressed confidence that collective intervention could transform the unfortunate incident into an opportunity to demonstrate the strength, compassion and unity of the people of Cross River State.
The victims said they remain hopeful that government, businesses, organisations and individuals will respond positively to their appeal and help affected tenants rebuild their livelihoods.
