Customs Intercepts ₦3.67bn Drug Shipment Hidden in Cars

Written by Mary Bassey

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying suspected illicit drugs valued at approximately ₦3.67 billion at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The seized substances reportedly include Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, which were allegedly concealed among imported used vehicles and automobile spare parts in an attempt to evade detection.

The interception highlights ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Customs Service to prevent the importation of prohibited substances through the nation’s seaports.

The discovery of the suspected drugs hidden alongside vehicles and spare parts has also drawn attention to the methods used to conceal illicit substances within legitimate import consignments.

The containers were intercepted during cargo inspection at the Lagos port, where Customs officers conduct checks to identify prohibited goods and other items that violate Nigeria’s import regulations.

The estimated value of ₦3.67 billion underscores the financial scale of the seizure. However, further details regarding the total quantity of the substances, the importers involved, and possible arrests were not provided in the information available.

The interception forms part of broader efforts to strengthen border security, disrupt the smuggling of prohibited substances, and protect Nigerians from the illegal drug trade.

Further official details from the Nigeria Customs Service are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the seizure and the next steps in the investigation.
