The Delta State House of Assembly has approved a proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution that could pave the way for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
The proposal received unanimous support, with all 23 members present voting in favour during the assembly’s consideration of the constitutional alteration.
The development marks another step in the ongoing national debate over the creation of state police as a possible solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Supporters of state policing have argued that allowing states to establish their own police forces could improve local intelligence gathering, strengthen community security and enable faster responses to crimes.
However, the proposal still requires the constitutionally prescribed approval process involving other state assemblies and the National Assembly before the relevant constitutional provisions can be amended.
The move by the Delta lawmakers adds to the growing discussions surrounding police reforms and efforts to address insecurity across the country.
Further details on the implementation of the proposed amendment are expected as the constitutional review process progresses.
