Femi Kuti Explains What He Thinks Is Really Wrong With Nigeria

Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti has offered a different perspective on Nigeria’s political and economic challenges, arguing that President Bola Tinubu should not be viewed as the country’s fundamental problem.

Kuti attributed many of Nigeria’s longstanding difficulties to what he described as deeply rooted institutional corruption, arguing that the failure of key institutions has allowed questionable leadership and poor accountability to persist.

The musician made the remarks during a recent episode of the Good News Naija podcast, which has generated discussions online.

According to Kuti, Nigeria’s institutions, particularly the judiciary and other bodies responsible for enforcing accountability, must also be examined when discussing the country’s leadership problems.

He argued that where credible institutions function effectively, allegations of corruption against political aspirants should be properly investigated and addressed before such individuals are allowed to seek the highest offices in the country.

Kuti’s position appeared to shift attention away from focusing solely on individual political leaders and towards the broader systems that determine who gets into power and how those in authority are held accountable.

He suggested that if allegations previously levelled against Tinubu were established as true, institutions with strong integrity should have taken appropriate steps to prevent his emergence as president.

The Afrobeat musician’s comments have sparked debate over whether Nigeria’s political challenges should primarily be blamed on individual leaders or on the institutional structures that have enabled successive administrations to operate.

His remarks come amid ongoing public discussions about governance, corruption, accountability and the performance of the Tinubu administration.
