FG Set to Launch New Medical School for the Military — Here’s What It Means

Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish a specialised medical institution that will train doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals exclusively for the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The initiative, which is expected to commence with the admission of its first set of military medical cadets in the 2026 academic session, is aimed at strengthening healthcare services within the nation’s defence sector.

Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, announced the development on Friday in Abuja during the inauguration of a Technical Working Group tasked with fast-tracking the establishment of the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

According to the minister, the proposed college will provide high-quality medical education tailored to the unique healthcare needs of military personnel while boosting the capacity of the Armed Forces to deliver effective medical services during both peacekeeping and combat operations.

Alausa noted that the institution forms part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to improving medical education, expanding healthcare manpower and enhancing national security through a well-trained military health workforce.

The Technical Working Group is expected to develop the framework for the college’s take-off, including its academic structure, regulatory requirements and operational guidelines, to ensure the institution is ready for the 2026 admission cycle.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Ikharo Attah.

The proposed Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences is expected to complement existing military medical facilities while producing highly skilled doctors, nurses and allied health professionals dedicated to serving within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
