Gombe Girls’ Scholarship Faces Questions Over Payments, Fees

Written by Mary Bassey

The Gombe State Government’s scholarship programme for 12,101 female students is facing scrutiny over alleged delays in payments, card activation charges and the distribution of funds to participating schools.

The initiative, implemented under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, aims to improve girls’ access to education and reduce the financial challenges that prevent many from attending or completing school.

Under the reported payment structure, each eligible student is expected to receive ₦60,000 per academic session. The amount comprises ₦40,000 at the transition stage and ₦10,000 for each of the two school terms.

However, concerns have reportedly emerged over the timing of disbursements, the alleged fees required to activate beneficiaries’ payment cards and questions about the amounts allocated to participating schools.

These concerns have raised questions about the administration of the programme and whether beneficiaries are receiving the intended support without additional financial burdens.

The AGILE project is a Federal Government initiative supported by the World Bank to improve educational opportunities for adolescent girls, strengthen learning environments and address barriers to girls’ education in participating states, including Gombe.

The reported concerns highlight the importance of transparency in the management of education support programmes, particularly those designed to help students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Clarification from the relevant authorities on the reported payment delays, card activation charges and school allocations would help address concerns among beneficiaries, parents and other stakeholders.
