Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, on Thursday joined former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, Justices of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Senior Advocates of Nigeria and other eminent Nigerians to honour renowned legal luminary Chief Kanu Godwin Agabi, SAN, CON, at 80.
The gathering, held in Abuja, featured a public lecture and presentation of publications in honour of Chief Agabi by the Body of Benchers, bringing together prominent members of Nigeria’s legal profession and public life.
Governor Otu, who participated in the ceremony, described the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate the values of excellence, hard work, commitment and ethical conduct that have characterised Agabi’s eight decades of life and public service.
The Governor said Chief Agabi remains a worthy son of Cross River State, patriot and statesman whose contributions have extended beyond the legal profession to national development.
Otu Celebrates Agabi’s Contribution to Law and Society
According to Governor Otu, Chief Agabi’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Nigeria’s prominent legal figures demonstrates the impact of dedication and professional excellence.
“From a humble beginning, Chief Agabi SAN has braved the odds to shape society and in particular the legal profession where he remains one of the esteemed titans,” the Governor said.
Otu noted that Cross River State would continue to recognise Agabi’s contribution to the state and the nation, adding that his administration would continue to value the legal luminary’s guidance and experience.
“As a Government and People of Cross River State, we continue to celebrate his place in our history and the nation at large and will not cease to seek his guidance and immense wisdom as we deliver on the People First Agenda,” he said.
Governor Calls for Continuity in Governance
The Cross River Governor also used the occasion to speak on the importance of continuity in government, saying Nigeria is on a path towards greater national development.
Otu told the gathering that sustained progress requires continuity in governance and the preservation of policies and programmes that contribute to national development.
“Nigeria is on the path of greatness and only continuity in government can guarantee us as citizens and country the progress that we desire and truly deserve,” he said.
Otu Thanks Body of Benchers for Honouring Agabi
The Governor expressed appreciation to Chief Agabi for the inspiration he has provided through his life and career.
He also commended the Body of Benchers for organising the public lecture and presentation of publications in recognition of the legal icon.
“I thank Chief Agabi for the inspiration that he is and in particular the Body of Benchers for their thoughtfulness in holding such a worthy event for a man whose humanity transcends generations,” Otu said.
The event further highlighted Chief Agabi’s longstanding contribution to Nigeria’s legal profession and public service as he marked his 80th birthday.
Chief Agabi is a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and remains a prominent figure within Nigeria’s legal community. Recent public engagements have also seen him speak on issues concerning the legal profession, governance and national development.
