The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a Nigerian national, Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe, following his guilty plea to a disorderly conduct charge in Pennsylvania.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Igbojekwe was arrested on October 1, 2026, after pleading guilty to a charge arising from a public exposure incident in East Pennsboro Township, Pennsylvania.
The incident reportedly occurred on September 27, when a police officer approached a suspiciously parked vehicle near a public park and discovered that Igbojekwe had exposed himself.
Police records indicated that he told the officer he was in the neighbourhood to distribute campaign flyers for Democratic congressional candidate Janelle Stelson.
However, Stelson’s campaign has denied employing Igbojekwe, stating that it had never heard of him before news of his arrest emerged. Available campaign finance records also reportedly show no payments to him.
The controversy intensified after DHS publicly linked the incident to Stelson’s campaign in a statement announcing the Nigerian man’s arrest.
The statement drew criticism from Democrats and the nonpartisan watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), which filed a complaint alleging that the department’s remarks could violate the Hatch Act, a US law restricting certain political activities by federal employees.
DHS said Igbojekwe entered the United States legally in 2017 but remained in the country beyond his authorised period of stay. He was reportedly granted deferred action in 2021 under the administration of former President Joe Biden.
His arrest has renewed attention on immigration enforcement and the use of federal agencies in political disputes ahead of the November 2026 US midterm elections.
