The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has revealed that the committee responsible for developing the framework for Nigeria’s proposed state police system examined policing models in India, the United States and Pakistan before submitting its recommendations.
Disu made the disclosure on Thursday during a workshop on state policing held in Abuja, explaining that the committee conducted a detailed comparative study of countries where state policing is already in operation to ensure that Nigeria adopts a system suited to its unique security challenges.
According to him, the workshop was organised to familiarise senior police officers with the proposed structure, clarify misconceptions and encourage informed discussions on the future of state policing in Nigeria.
“We are going to deliberate on a very important topic of state police. This is an issue that has generated widespread debate across the country and in many parts of the world,” the Inspector-General said.
He stressed that the committee did not rely on theory alone but carefully assessed how sub-national policing works in other federal systems, studying their strengths, challenges and operational structures before drafting recommendations for Nigeria.
The proposed state police system has remained one of the country’s most debated security reforms, with supporters arguing that decentralised policing would improve intelligence gathering, enhance community policing and strengthen the fight against insecurity. Critics, however, have expressed concerns over the possibility of political interference and abuse by state governments.
The Federal Government is yet to take a final decision on the implementation of state police, as consultations with key stakeholders continue.
