INEC Reveals New AI Plan for 2027 Election Results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the verification of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Tuesday while giving an update on the commission’s preparations for the 2027 elections and its plans for the use of artificial intelligence.

According to Amupitan, the commission has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division under its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department to strengthen its election management processes.

He said automated AI auditing tools have also been integrated into the commission’s Results Management process to identify discrepancies and possible administrative errors before results undergo final verification.

However, the INEC chairman stressed that the use of AI would not replace human officials. He said the technology would operate under a five-pillar AI governance framework with mandatory human oversight and auditing.

Amupitan added that INEC is finalising an AI governance policy that will guide the responsible use of the technology during the electoral process.

The commission is also strengthening its cybersecurity infrastructure in preparation for the 2027 elections.

The INEC chairman said the commission is working with international technology partners to deploy AI-powered anomaly detection tools capable of monitoring database traffic and helping to protect its public-facing portals against cyber intrusions and unauthorised alterations.

Beyond results verification, INEC is also taking other steps to prepare for the 2027 polls, including nationwide mock accreditation exercises and additional readiness assessments across the country.

The commission has increasingly turned to technology as it prepares for the 2027 elections, with AI expected to play a growing role in detecting irregularities, combating election-related disinformation and strengthening the security of its digital systems.
