Kanu’s Lawyer Gives Tinubu Condition Before Seeking South-East Votes

Written by Mary Bassey

Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to release thousands of Igbo youths allegedly detained across Nigeria for supporting Biafra or advocating self-determination.

Ejimakor made the call in a statement on Friday, October 16, 2026, insisting that the Federal Government should address the alleged detention of the youths before seeking electoral support from the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The lawyer argued that it was unjust for politicians to seek votes from the region while young people were allegedly being held for expressing their political views.

He also claimed that some detainees had spent years in custody without trial, mentioning Wawa Barracks in Niger State as one of the facilities where some were allegedly being held.

Ejimakor further urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to make the release of detained Biafra agitators a major issue in their political campaigns.

He called on South-East political leaders supporting Tinubu’s administration to demand the release of the youths, arguing that political loyalty should not come at the expense of their freedom.

The lawyer maintained that the issue of self-determination and the treatment of people advocating for Biafra should receive greater attention as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.

His comments have brought renewed attention to the wider debate over the detention of Biafra agitators, the rights of political protesters and the Federal Government’s approach to resolving tensions in the South-East.
