The Lagos State Government is set to deploy an additional 220 compactor trucks as part of efforts to improve waste collection and evacuation across the state.
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat disclosed this on Saturday during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held in Festac, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
Hamzat said the new trucks would complement the existing Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste collection system and strengthen the state’s capacity to respond to the growing volume of refuse generated daily.
“The state government will be bringing in another 220 trucks to make sure that we supplement our PSP,” Hamzat said, urging residents to patronise accredited PSP operators instead of cart pushers.
He explained that Lagos’ rapidly growing population had resulted in increased waste generation, making additional waste collection vehicles necessary.
“A lot of people are coming to Lagos, and therefore they generate waste. So part of what you can see that we are doing is that we are getting many more trucks to actually go and evacuate,” he added.
The deputy governor also warned residents against dumping refuse in canals, noting that blocked waterways could obstruct the free flow of water and worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
He urged residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and to dispose of waste through approved channels.
The latest announcement comes about two months after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the procurement of 150 additional compactor trucks to strengthen waste collection across Lagos.
LAWMA has also disclosed that Lagos generates between 13,000 and 15,000 tonnes of waste daily, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing the state’s waste management system.
The authority has said it is working on new infrastructure, including transfer loading stations and other facilities, to improve waste evacuation and reduce pressure on existing disposal sites.
Hamzat further called for stronger community participation in environmental sanitation, saying communities should organise regular clean-up exercises to maintain healthier and cleaner surroundings.
He stressed that achieving a sustainable environment would require cooperation between the government and residents, while urging Lagosians to make proper waste disposal a shared responsibility.
