The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has publicly destroyed more than 12 tonnes of assorted illicit drugs as part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, abuse, and related crimes across Nigeria.
The destruction exercise, which took place in Kano on Monday, involved 12,233.946 kilograms (approximately 12.234 tonnes) of various illicit substances that had been seized during intelligence-led operations and enforcement activities carried out by the command.
The exercise was supervised by the Kano State Commander of the NDLEA, CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, who reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eliminating illegal drugs from communities and protecting residents, particularly young people, from the devastating effects of substance abuse.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the command’s Media and Advocacy Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, and made available to journalists in Kano.
According to the statement, the public destruction of the seized drugs demonstrates the agency’s transparency in handling confiscated narcotics while sending a strong warning to drug traffickers and dealers that illegal drug activities will not be tolerated.
Lawal commended officers and operatives of the command for their dedication and professionalism in intercepting the illicit drugs. He also called on members of the public to continue supporting the NDLEA by providing credible information that would aid in the identification and arrest of individuals involved in drug-related crimes.
The NDLEA has continued to intensify nationwide operations against the production, trafficking, and distribution of illicit substances, with several large-scale seizures and arrests recorded across different states in recent months. The agency has repeatedly emphasized that the fight against drug abuse requires collaboration between security agencies, community leaders, and the general public.
