Obong of Calabar and others unite Southern Traditional Rulers

The Southern Traditional Rulers Council in Nigeria was officially inaugurated on the 30th of July 2024, signaling a new era of unity, peace, and prosperity for the Southern region of Nigeria. This council, the fruition of a long-held vision, represents a unified front for traditional rulers across the South, poised to amplify their collective voice and address the aspirations of their people.

The creation of this council fulfills the long-standing aspiration of the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, who has consistently championed the need for a unified Southern monarchial council. His vision for unity among the Southern traditional rulers is now realized, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration and collective action.

The inauguration event, was hosted over by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State, who served as the Chief Host. The occasion brought together an impressive assembly of royal fathers, political leaders, and dignitaries from across the region and the nation.

The council will be led by His Royal Majesty, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, the Ooni of Ife, who has been appointed as the Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council. His Majesty\’s leadership is anticipated to guide the council in uniting the Southern monarchs, ensuring their collective influence is directed toward the region\’s growth and the nation\’s overall development.Key traditional figures in this newly formed council include:

His Majesty King Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja, DSSRS, CFR, Jeki V Treaty King, Natural Ruler Amanyanabo of Opobo, who will serve as Co-Chairman,
Eze Dr. CI Ilomuanya, CON, Obí of Obinugwu, also serving as Co-Chairman His Royal Majesty Oba (Engr.) Sulaiman Adekunle Bagbade Ayodele, Ilufemiloye Olofin of Isher, the representative of the Oba of Benin, and other traditional rulers.

The Obong of Calabar was accompanied by the Paramount Rulers of Obanlikwu, Biase, and the Muri Munene of Efuts , all from Cross River State.

The Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council is set to be more than just a body of traditional leaders; it is a symbol of a new era where the collective wisdom and authority of the Southern monarchs will be harnessed to promote regional development, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to the peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

Together, we can overcome any obstacle and pave the way for a prosperous future for our region and our nation.\”

Adding his voice to the occasion, the Obong of Calabar, whose relentless advocacy was instrumental in the formation of the council, remarked, \”This council is not just a body; it is the embodiment of our collective will and determination to see our people thrive. Our unity is our strength, and with this council, we are better positioned to safeguard the traditions we hold dear while forging a path toward a brighter future for our region and our country.\”
