A 12-storey building under construction has collapsed in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, triggering an emergency rescue operation amid fears that several people may be trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, along 9th Street in the Eastleigh neighbourhood, a busy commercial area where workers, traders and residents were present.
According to reports, the building was still under construction when it suddenly collapsed at about 1 p.m., sending concrete and other debris crashing to the ground.
Rescue teams, police officers and emergency personnel rushed to the scene to search for possible survivors and determine how many people may have been affected. The Kenya Red Cross also deployed a team to support the emergency response.
Nairobi County officials confirmed that the ground floor was occupied at the time of the collapse, raising concerns about the safety of people who may have been inside the building.
One injured woman was reportedly rescued and taken to hospital, while authorities continued efforts to locate other possible victims. However, the total number of people trapped, injured or killed had not been officially established in the initial reports.
The rescue operation also faced challenges as crowds gathered around the scene, with police using tear gas to disperse people and clear access routes for emergency responders. Officials also raised concerns about the possibility of further structural collapse because the damaged building was leaning against a neighbouring structure.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The situation remains developing as emergency teams continue their search and rescue efforts.
