The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has been honoured with two prestigious awards by the Pink Africa Foundation in partnership with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in recognition of its steadfast support in the fight against breast cancer.
The awards were presented to the union during a breast cancer awareness rally organized by Pink Africa Foundation and its partners in Calabar on Saturday.
During the event, the organizing bodies presented the NUJ with the Black Opal Award as the Most Resourceful Organization. The recognition highlights the NUJ’s invaluable contributions of resources, expertise, services, volunteers, and creative solutions to breast cancer advocacy and awareness campaigns.
In addition, the union received the Titanium Award as the Most Engaging Organization. This honour recognizes the NUJ’s exceptional ability to inspire, participate, foster meaningful engagement, and keep communities actively connected to the fight against breast cancer.
Expressing their appreciation, the host organizations thanked NUJ Cross River for consistently finding impactful ways to make a difference in society.
Reacting to the double honours, Chairman of the NUJ Cross River State Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey, expressed delight and gratitude for the recognition achieved under her leadership.
“This is so exciting. I am so honoured that in my tenure, NUJ brought two awards in one day. What can I say? Thank you, Jesus,” Bassey said. “I want to thank the Pink Africa Foundation and the Union for International Cancer Control for finding us worthy of these awards.”
She noted that the recognition serves as a testament to the power of dedicated effort and community service.
“This just goes to show what I have been saying every day – that let us keep our candle burning in our secret little corners because you don’t know who is watching. You don’t know whose life you are impacting,” she stated. “Now we all can see that the little things we do here in Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, are actually being seen and appreciated.”
Reflecting on the timing of the recognition following a challenging period for the council, Bassey added: “It’s so good to smile again, to laugh again, to be happy. We all know how last week or the outgoing week has been for us, and just today all of us are out here rejoicing, celebrating. I am ecstatic that this is happening in my time.”
She assured the awarding institutions of the union’s unwavering commitment to future collaboration, pledging that the NUJ would continue to amplify awareness and support the foundation’s initiatives.
