Written by Mary Bassey

Security operatives in Imo State have intensified efforts to rescue 19 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) abducted by gunmen in the state.

The Imo State Police Command and the 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri, confirmed that joint operations are ongoing to locate the victims and secure their safe release.

The prospective corps members were reportedly kidnapped on Thursday morning when gunmen attacked two fully loaded commercial buses travelling from Ibadan to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Bende, Abia State.

The attack occurred at about 6:30 a.m. at Umunoha, a location popularly known as “No Man’s Land”, in Ogbaku, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of travellers along the route, particularly young Nigerians travelling to their respective destinations for the mandatory one-year national service.

Following the attack, security agencies reportedly launched coordinated operations to track down the abductors, establish the whereabouts of the victims and ensure their rescue.

The police and military have maintained that efforts are ongoing, although further details about the operation and the condition of the abducted corps members have yet to be officially disclosed.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over the safety of prospective corps members travelling across the country, with calls for stronger security measures along major highways.
