The Oyo State Police Command has presented insurance cheques totalling ₦37.89 million to families and next-of-kin of police officers who died while in service.
The cheques, valued at ₦37,889,857.87, were presented on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a ceremony held at the command headquarters in Ibadan.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola, presented the cheques on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, under the Nigeria Police Force’s insurance and welfare arrangements for personnel who die in service.
According to the command, the payment was intended to provide financial support to the affected families and acknowledge the sacrifices made by the deceased officers in the course of their duties.
Abimbola said no amount of money could replace the loved ones lost by the families, but noted that the insurance payment showed that the sacrifices of the fallen officers had not been forgotten.
He described the deceased officers as men and women who served with courage and dedication, contributing to the security and stability of society.
The commissioner also urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly for the welfare, education and future needs of their families.
While representatives of the families were present at the ceremony, the command said only 10 families were scheduled to receive their cheques at the event, with other beneficiaries expected to collect their payments through the pension office as the process progresses.
The gesture is part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen welfare support for serving personnel, retirees and families of officers who die in service.
