The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Sokoto Branch, has handed over 700 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to the Sokoto State Government as part of efforts to tackle malnutrition among vulnerable children.
The intervention was supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) under the Malnutrition Emergency Appeal Programme (MEAP).
The commodities were formally handed over on Friday to the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SSPHCDA), which is expected to oversee their distribution to targeted beneficiaries.
According to the NRCS, the RUTF will support efforts to meet the nutritional needs of children aged between six and 59 months, particularly those affected by or vulnerable to malnutrition.
The supplies will be distributed across Sokoto North, Sokoto South and Wamakko Local Government Areas, where the MEAP is currently being implemented.
The intervention is expected to complement ongoing efforts by the Sokoto State Government and health authorities to improve nutrition outcomes among vulnerable children.
A representative of the state government commended the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the IFRC for the support and assured that the therapeutic food would be properly utilised and distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
The Sokoto Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the state government, health authorities and other partners to strengthen interventions aimed at preventing and addressing malnutrition among vulnerable children.
Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food is specially formulated to help treat severe acute malnutrition and is designed to provide children with concentrated nutrients and energy during nutritional rehabilitation.
