Retiring Works Director Reveals the One Sector FG Must Stop Neglecting

Written by Mary Bassey

The retiring Director of Highways, Construction and Rehabilitation at the Federal Ministry of Works, Clement Ogbuagu, has called on the Federal Government to give greater priority to funding road infrastructure projects, describing the sector as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic growth and national development.

Ogbuagu made the appeal on Thursday during a valedictory ceremony held in his honour at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja as he bowed out after years of service.

According to him, consistent and timely investment in road construction and rehabilitation is essential to improving transportation, boosting trade, enhancing connectivity and supporting economic activities across the country.

“I want the Federal Government to pay more attention to the road sector because it is the road network that drives the Gross Domestic Product of any nation. Without good roads, economic activities will suffer and national development will be slowed,” he said.

The retiring director stressed that an efficient road network remains the backbone of commerce, agriculture and industrial growth, noting that businesses and citizens depend heavily on reliable transportation infrastructure.

He urged the government to ensure adequate and prompt release of funds for ongoing and future road projects, saying this would accelerate project delivery, reduce infrastructure deficits and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

Ogbuagu also expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Works, colleagues and stakeholders for their support throughout his career, while encouraging younger professionals in the ministry to uphold professionalism, integrity and dedication to public service.
